How Much Does Product Photography Cost in India?

A per image quote is a day rate in disguise, so here is what actually moves the number on a product shoot, and what to send so the quote holds.

Say you sent the same brief to three studios. One comes back at Rs 150 an image. One comes back at Rs 8,000. The third would like to "hop on a quick call", which is its own kind of number. So how much does product photography cost in India? The honest answer starts with a correction: the image is the wrong unit. The day is.

We quote product and beauty shoots out of our Mumbai studio every week, and have for eight years. Here is what we'd tell you over chai: why the quotes don't match, what moves the price, how many products really fit into a day, and what to put in a brief so the number holds.

Why product photography quotes are all over the place

Because they are not quoting the same thing. A Rs 150 image and a Rs 8,000 image can both be honest. The first is typically one angle of one SKU on a white sweep, in a long queue of SKUs under a lighting setup nobody touches all day. The second is typically a single styled still: its own surface, its own light, maybe a face, and a retoucher who spends real time on it. Same word, "image". Very different day.

The spread isn't an Indian quirk either. Shopify's guide to product photography pricing (January 2026) puts per image rates anywhere between $50 and $350, and day rates between $500 and $3,000. That is a sevenfold spread before anyone has asked what you sell. Treat those as global market ranges, not our rates, and not a rupee conversion waiting to happen.

A per image price is a day rate in disguise

Here is what professional product photography costs someone to run: a photographer, an assistant, often a stylist, the studio, the lights and grip, the surfaces and props, then the hours of retouching. That is a day. A per image price is that day divided by the number of images the studio assumes will fit into it.

So the real question behind every per image quote is how many images they assumed. If a studio priced you as though forty SKUs would slide through one lighting setup, and your range turns out to be three glass bottles, a jar with a mirrored lid and a tube that needs a swatch, that number was never going to survive contact with the set. You'll find out on the day, usually around 4pm.

A per image price is a day rate in disguise. The only question worth asking is how many images the quote assumed would fit into that day.

That is why the cheapest per image quote is not always the cheapest shoot. Anything it quietly leaves out (styling, retouching, usage) comes back later as a line item.

What moves the price of a product shoot

Strip the pricing model away and the same handful of variables decide almost every product shoot price in India that we write:

What changesKeeps it leanPushes it up
SKUs and anglesMany SKUs, one or two angles, one setupFew SKUs, many angles, a new setup each
Kind of imageClean listing set on whiteHero or campaign still with its own surface and light

Pack finishMatte cartons and tubesGlass, gloss, metal, pearlescent: a lighting test first
RetouchingDust, colour, clean-upLabel rebuilds, composites, skin work
UsageYour site and marketplacesPaid ads, print, outdoor, long durations

Four of those are the ones that surprise people.

Model-led means a bigger day, not a bigger image

The moment a face enters the frame, the shoot changes shape. There is casting, an MUA (makeup artist) on the floor all day, which for beauty work is not optional, hair, wardrobe, and setups that take longer because skin has to read as skin while the product still wins the frame. The model's fee is its own line on the quote.

Shiny packs get a test before the shoot

Glass, gloss, metal and pearlescent packs are mirrors with a logo on them. They reflect the lights, the stands, the photographer and, occasionally, the client's phone. We give those packs a lighting test before the day, because the alternative is discovering the problem with the whole crew standing around. A matte carton needs none of that, so two products of the same size can sit at opposite ends of a quote.

Styling and set building

A white sweep costs almost nothing. A sourced stone surface, a colour-matched backdrop and a small built set cost time and a stylist who does this every week. At the far end sit pieces built for one campaign. For our LOVETC lip conditioner campaign that meant an oversized lip conditioner the models posed with, and a restaurant table built inside the studio. Wonderful to shoot. Not a Rs 150 line item.

Retouching depth and usage

Dust, colour and a straight label are one job. Rebuilding a label, compositing a splash or cleaning skin on a beauty close up is another, priced in hours. We clean skin, we don't replace it, and most of that work happens on set with the MUA and the light, which is cheaper than fixing it in post.

Usage is the line brands forget. Images for your own site are one thing; the same images on a hoarding for two years are another. Stock libraries call pricing by specific use rights-managed licensing, and the Shopify guide notes that some commercial rates are driven more by usage than by time. Tell the studio where the pictures will live, and for how long, and the quote stops guessing.

How many products can you shoot in a day?

This is the question that decides the number. For hero and campaign stills, where every product gets its own surface, light and styling, three to five SKUs in a full day is realistic. For a clean e-commerce set, where one lighting setup works across the range and the stylist is resetting rather than rebuilding, many more.

A hero setup means moving lights, building the surface, dressing it, chasing a reflection off a cap, then doing it all again for the next product. A clean set means the light is locked and the products take turns. That is why e-commerce product photography prices come in lower per image: the whole range shares one setup.

Clean does not mean careless. Marketplaces have rules, and Amazon India's product image guide asks for a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255) on the main image, the product filling about 85 percent of the frame, and at least 1,000 pixels on the longest side so zoom works (as of September 2026; the rules do change). Shoot to spec and nothing gets rejected or cropped badly. That is what our e-commerce product photography is built around, and it is boring in the best possible way.

Listing images and campaign stills should look like one brand

Is e-commerce photography cheaper than campaign photography? Per image, almost always. Per brand, not if the two sets look like they came from different companies. A customer usually meets you on a listing page and decides on a campaign image, or the other way round, so the two should share a colour temperature, a family of surfaces and a lighting temperament. To the customer, they are the same brand.

The cheap looking product photo has a tell, and it is rarely the camera. As we wrote in the art of making a product look expensive, when product photography looks like a shopping site, nine times out of ten the base is acrylic. Plan both sets together and the listings pick up some of the campaign's taste for very little extra.

The cheapest good stills are shot on a film day

If a film is anywhere in your plan, say so in the first email. The lighting, surfaces, styling and product prep are already paid for by the film, so a stills camera on a second setup, or a locked frame captured between takes, adds a few hours rather than a second day. Stills on a film day are the cheapest good stills a brand can buy, and the campaign ends up looking like one campaign instead of two.

Unlike photography, our film budgets are published, because opacity about money helps nobody: a Rs 1 Lakh founder tier, a Rs 5 Lakh standard brand film and a Rs 15 Lakh campaign tier, all Mumbai numbers. Here is what each of those film budgets buys, department by department. LOVETC is the shape of it: a hero film, a macro film and a full set of stills, all in one look.

Why we don't publish a photography price list

We get asked this a lot, usually right after "so is it per image?". You won't find a product photography price list on our site, and that is deliberate. Product photography is quoted on the day and on the deliverables, not on a rate card we hide behind. A rate card has to pick a day. Price it for a clean e-commerce set of forty products and a six image campaign shoot is underquoted by a mile. Price it for the campaign and the forty SKU set is overcharged. We would rather quote the two honestly than quote them the same.

Instead, send a written brief and you get a costed quote within 48 hours, with the day, the deliverables and the assumptions written down. If you are comparing product photography charges in Mumbai, compare quotes on those lines, not on the per image figure. How our shoots run, from brief to delivery, is on the product and beauty photography page.

What to put in the brief so the quote is accurate

A short email beats a forty slide deck. Send these and any studio, us included, can price the real job instead of a guessed one:

Quick answers

How much does product photography cost per image in India?

There is no honest single figure, because a per image quote is a day rate divided by the images the studio expects to fit into that day. Clean listing images on one shared lighting setup cost the least per image. Styled hero stills and model-led beauty cost far more, because far fewer fit into a day.

Why do product photography prices vary so much between studios?

Because studios are usually quoting different jobs under the same word. SKU count, clean set or hero still, tabletop or model-led, styling, pack finish, retouching and usage all change the day, and a per image price hides which of them were assumed.

How many products can be photographed in a day?

For hero and campaign stills, three to five SKUs in a full day is realistic, because each product gets its own surface, light and styling. For clean e-commerce sets that share one lighting setup, many more.

Is e-commerce product photography cheaper than campaign photography?

Per image, yes, because the lighting is set once and shared across every SKU. The best value comes from planning both together, so the listing and campaign images look like the same brand.

Can AI replace a product photography shoot?

Not for the images that sell the product. AI helps with backgrounds, variations and concept frames, but it still struggles with exact label fidelity and with how a texture really behaves. We use it where it earns its place, which is how our AI video production work is set up, and shoot the parts where truth matters.

Last note

Product photography isn't expensive or cheap in the abstract. It is a day, and a quote is only as good as the brief behind it. Decide what each image is for, count your SKUs honestly, flag the shiny packs and say where the pictures will live. The quotes will start agreeing with each other, which is a strange and pleasant feeling.

If you would like ours, send the SKU list through our contact page. We'll write back the same day.
